THE FIRST DALLAS PRIDE WAS A PROTEST

A photograph of a Gay Pride Parade held in Dallas, Texas on June 24th, 1972. Numerous people are holding signs promoting Gay Pride as they march on a street.

Photograph of three females with signs sitting on a car during the first Gay Pride Parade in the street. Written on signs are the words "Tired of hiding - Want to be free," "Don't laugh, I may be happier than you!," and "Buy and Read 'Gay Crusaders' by Kay Tobin." A handwritten on the back says, "1st Gay Pride Parade. June 24 1972."

In 1965 Phil Johnson created the first LGBTQ+ organization in Texas, Circle of Friends. Although Circle of Friends started off as a social club and community, as time went on it became more organized and political. Circle of Friends organized the first Dallas pride parade on June 24, 1972.

Most of the organizing fell on lesbian members of Circle of Friends’ Rob Shivers and Chris McGee. Much of City Council objected to this parade, but had no legal basis to deny the permit. Dallas councilman George Allen “wished gays and lesbians didn’t parade here.” The parade made up of about 300 people from the Dallas queer community, with a float titled “Homosexuality is as American as Apple Pie.” The community chanted “Two, four, six, eight, gay is just as good as straight.”

The parade goals were more than just celebratory. It was a protest with the goal of educating the straight majority and disproving negative stereotypes about queer people. The float headed down Main Street to City Hall, a symbolic action hinting at the political needs and of the LGBTQ+ community.

This march was incredibly successful; there was no violence and city council acceptance (or lack of shutting down) the parade was a huge win for the Dallas queer community and gave hope to the community's future of acceptance.

Unfortunately, that acceptance didn’t come for years afterward as sex ban laws were upheld, discriminatory workplace practices were put in place, and the AIDS crisis killed thousands of queer people. Today, we are still fighting: politicians ban queer books, ban us from expressing our gender, take away our medical rights, and fail to protect our queer children. It is time for the Dallas queer community to come back to its roots of activism and protest.

HOW DID DALLAS PRIDE GET SO CORPORATE?

With the formation of areas like Oak Lawn in the mid to late 70s, the queer middle class flourished and their buying power became evident. Dallas Pride's first sponsor was Miller Lite, and as the parade got bigger the sponsors grew. Businesses and politicians saw an opportunity for sponsorships and to take economic advantage by supporting the queer minority. The queer community saw these opportunities for sponsorships as symbolic of economic acceptance and stability for the LGBTQ+ community.

Today, we celebrate Pride with companies upholding American militarization and imperialism. The Dallas Pride organization website informs potential sponsors about the LGBTQ+ community’s 1.4 trillion dollar buying power and that LGBTQ+ make 10% more shopping trips than non-LGBTQ+ homes.

Our community should not be easily bought. The oppression and injustice that the LGBTQ+ community faces is being overshadowed by mega corporations trying to make a quick buck. The systems that are killing people in Palestine and Sudan are the same systems that are taking away LGBTQ+ rights in America. The same corporations that are celebrating pride with us are active in LGBTQ+ oppression.

THE BOEING COMPANY

Boeing is a multinational corporation that designs and manufactures airplanes, rotorcraft, rockets, satellites, telecommunications equipment, and missiles worldwide. Currently worth $109 billion, Boeing has been providing weapons and planes for the IDF since the founding of the occupation in 1948, as they proudly state on their website.

Boeing manufactures fighter jets, attack helicopters, missiles, bombs, and guided bomb kits. The F-15 fighter jet is the preferred aircraft for the IDF. The IDF has used Boeing manufactured GBU-39 bombs and JDAM kits consistently in its fatal attacks against the Palestinian civilian population.

Boeing bombs used in 2008/2009 attacks on Gaza contain metal explosives, which is a mix of explosive powder and heavy dense metals such as tungsten. This type of explosive can cause limbs to be completely severed, deep burns, and cauterization of wounds.

Boeing manufactured GBU-31 and JDAM kits where used in an attack of Jabalia refugee camp (November 2, 2023.)

Jabalia refugee camp is one of the most densely packed areas in the world. 195 people were murdered in this bombing and these deadly bombs left massive holes in the area.

It is estimated that Israel will spend $10 billion on weapons and aircraft from Boeing in the next decade. Boeing has committed to investing $3.5 billion in Israeli businesses.

BANK OF AMERICA

Bank of America is one of the world's largest financial institutions, currently worth $309 billion. In 2023, Bank of America was a part of a $500 million loan deal to Elbit Systems, an Israeli weapons manufacturer. Elbit manufactures military electronics, drones, and surveillance technology.

Elbit supplies 85% of drones used by the Israeli army. One of those drones was used in 2014, to murder four Palestinian boys, Ahed Bakr (9), Zakaria Bakr (10), Mohammed Bakr(11), and Ismail Bakr (9) while they were playing on the beach.

Elbit produces all ammunition for Israeli military aircraft (manufactured by Lockheed Martin and Boeing.) The MPR-500, a "Smart bomb" designed and manufactured by Elbit, murdered 28 civilians, including 18 children during the IDF "Operation Protective Edge."

Elbit has manufactured banned weapons that utilize chemical warfare; white phosphorus, cluster bombs, and flechette projectiles. White phosphorus bombs have been used on civilians in both Gaza and Lebanon as recently as this year. Chemical weapons have been deemed illegal by the international community because of their unpredictability and high risk to civilians.

Elbit manufactures surveillance technology used to survey the illegal apartheid wall in the West Bank, Palestine. Elbit also has military contracts with the UK and US, and has worked with the US on its border wall.

TOYOTA

Toyota is a multinational automotive manufacturer known for producing cars, trucks, and hybrids, currently worth $337.5 billion. Toyota’s Hilux and Land Cruiser pick up trucks are uses the frame of the David Urban Light Armored Vehicle. The David is a multi-terrain combat vehicle used by the IDF. The David has been the preferred vehicle for the IDF for over a decade. It is a versatile battle vehicle that allows multiple weapons to be shot from different angles.

These vehicles have been used in occupied West Bank and Gaza as a tool of violence and oppression. The David vehicles are used during home demolitions, military raids, to suppress Palestinian demonstrations, arrest Palestinians, and shoot Palestinian civilians.

An example of this is February 22, 2023 when IDF soldiers fired 14 rounds at unarmed Palestinian civilians hiding during a military raid of occupied West Bank.

This shooting resulted in the murder of Mohammed Shaaban(16) and Abdelaziz Ashqar(65.) The David was also used May 11, 2022 in the murder of prominent Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Independent investigation confirmed that marksman could clearly see her and her colleague’s press vests in blatant disregard for journalist safety. Analysis has shown in both these incidents that the marksman shot to kill, shooting the head and chest repeatedly.

It is estimated that the IDF obtained 350 Toyota vehicles totaling $53.4 million. The US Department of Defense purchased these vehicles for Israel as part of the U.S. Foreign military sales program.

STARBUCKS COFFEE

Starbucks is a global coffeehouse chain that offers a variety of coffee and beverages, currently worth $90 billion. Starbucks has a reputation of overworking employees, underpaying, withholding full-time hours so staff can’t get benefits, and dangerous work conditions. National Labor Relations Board found Starbucks has illegally repressed employees’ rights. Starbucks has gone out of their way to shut down unions, including firing union activists, slowing down negotiations, and reducing hours of workers after union elections.

On October 10th Starbucks Workers United posted on social media “Solidarity with Palestine.” Starbucks quickly responded with a cease and desist letter, “Starbucks unequivocally condemns acts of terrorism, hate and violence committed by Hamas, and we strongly disagree with the views expressed by Workers United..”

and demanded that Starbucks Workers United stop using the Starbucks name and logo and issue a correction of their support for Palestine civilians.

After Starbucks Workers United refused, Starbucks filed a lawsuit. This lawsuit is an attempt to silence Starbucks workers speaking out about genocide and further shut down the work of unions. Starbucks has made no statement condemning the acts of violence and terrorism the Israeli government and IDF have committed against Palestinian civilians.

Starbucks former CEO and chairman Howard Schultz was among a WhatsApp group of billionaires, business tycoons, and NYC mayor Eric Adams. The groups goal was to “change the narrative” surrounding the genocide in Gaza, in favor of Israel.

Group chat members discussed making donations to NYC Mayor Eric Adams and brainstormed ways to pressure Columbia board of trustees to send police on Student protesters.

In 2023, select Starbucks cafes discourage staff from hanging up Pride decorations to celebrate Pride Month. Starbucks cafes in various states asked staff to take down pride decorations and some staff was told they would be allowed to decorate at all. Staff were given different reasons for not allowing pride decorations, from safety issues to possibly needing to hang decorations celebrating other groups (such as the well-known white supremacist group the Proud Boys) if Pride decorations were hung. Workers from a Wisconsin Starbucks were told the cafe needed to be “ welcoming for everyone.” Flags and banners were removed by the store manager, despite most of the staff being part of the LGBTQ+ community.

LOCKHEED MARTIN

Lockheed Martin is a military defense and security company currently worth $112 billion. Lockheed Martin manufactures war planes, attack helicopters, missiles, and bombs used by the IDF. These bombs have been used against Palestinian civilians causing mass casualties and loss of infrastructure. These weapons have been used in the current genocide against Palestinians and other war crimes since 2007.

Lockheed Martin’s “hellfire missiles” have been frequently used against the Palestinian civilian population. In 2014 the IDF used hellfire missiles in an attack on Gaza where 51 people were murdered including 24 children.

US-supplied F16 fighter jets and Boeing GBU-29 bombs were used in a IDF attack on Lebanon in 2006. During this attack, Lockheed Martin manufactured

cluster bombs (MlRS) were launched at civilians. 1,109 civilians were murdered, 4,399 civilians were injured. Cluster bombs are 2000-pound bombs filled with hundreds of bomblets that have the capability to explode an area the size of three football fields. These bombs spread an incredible amount of shrapnel making them especially lethal. Bomblets left undetonated can be as small as a soda can and can detonate later, wounding more civilians. Thousands of bomblets were left after these attacks, further endangering civilians.

Lockheed Martin also has military contracts with the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). Between 2006 and 2021, Lockheed Martin had 1.1 billion dollars worth of contracts with CBP and ICE. ICE been criticized for their detention centers., where infants and children are kept isolated in cages, subject to inhumane conditions and abuse.

The partnership between Lockheed Martin and Israeli is expected to exceed $4 billion. By the end of 2016, $933 million worth of agreements were signed with Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martin lobbied $13 million to congress last year, and in 2022 Lockheed Martin invested $1 billion in Saudi Arabia, where homosexuality is punishable by death.

J.P. MORGAN CHASE

JP Morgan Chase & Co. is a global financial services firm offering investment banking, financial services for consumers and businesses, currently worth $518 billion. JP Morgan Chase has major investments in PetroChina, an arm of Chinese National Petroleum Company (CNPC). CNPC has been funding the genocide in Sudan for decades, participating in the genocide and ethnic cleansing of 2.5 million civilians and the displacement of millions more.

CNPC contributes to funding the genocide, because 70-80% of the income generated by Sudan's revenue sharing agreement with CNPC is invested in the military. CNPC is Sudan’s largest investor, with $5 billion invested in oil field development and $7-8 billion invested in total assets in Sudan.

The CNPC are “engineer[ing] genocide in order to create that favorable business climate.” (Michael Kelly, Oregon Law Review vol.90 pg.414.) In 1997 CNPC purchased a 40% share in Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company, turning Sudan into a major oil exporter. The Darfur region is rich with oil reserves and the clearing of land coincides with displacement, mass violence, and murder towards civilians.

It’s estimated that 14-15,000 people have been murdered by the warring factions RSF and SAF. Eyewitnesses describe bodies being piled in the street and mass numbers of children being killed and their bodies burned.

Because of the economic collapse from the war, and lack of ability to produce crops, the cost of food is astronomical. The SAF is limiting aid and using famine as a tool of war. 18 million people are acutely hungry, including 3.6 million children who are acutely malnourished.

Sexual violence is also being used as a tool of war by both the RSF and the SAF. Civilians describe being gang raped for extensive periods of time often killing men and boys while raping women and girls. One woman even described being forced to eat her husband’s genitalia. These militant groups use sexual violence on Sudanese women to discourage them from repopulating the area.

JP Morgan owns 1.5 billion in PetroChina shares and is the biggest shareholder of the company. JP Morgan shareholders rejected a proposal from Investors Against Genocide to divest from PetroChina. JP Morgan’s holdings of PetroChina are heavily tied into JP Morgan’s wealth management. Eric Cohen, Founder and chairman of Investors Against Genocide explained investors are “inadvertently investing in these terrible companies that are helping fund genocide and have no idea.”

SANTANDER BANK

Santander Bank is a multinational financial services company headquartered in Spain, offering a wide range of banking and financial services, currently worth $83 billion. Santander has given $9.46 billion in loans to businesses in illegal West Bank settlements. The settlements are considered illegal by international law and constitute a war crime. International companies operating in illegal West Bank settlements help sustain and encourage the violence displacement of Palestinians from their land.

Palestinians in the West Bank frequently lose their land from violent riots from settlers. The IDF fails to intervene to protect Palestinians from settlers, and often participates. It is a common practice to burn homes, trees, farm land, vehicles, kill livestock, and bulldoze homes.

Torture, sexual violence, and threats of assault are also a common violent practice among Israeli settlers. Since October 7, at least 1,200 people have been displaced including 600 children in the West Bank. Palestinians also described settlers stealing personal property, cash, livestock, and fodder. Israeli settlers have also destroyed Palestinian schools, forcing children to lose out on school for months.

Salim, a 29-year old resident who was forcibly displaced with her seven children, was told by settlers attacking her that they would “cut our throats, and pointed at us, including our kids.” Salim carried her 8 month old and guided her other six children for five hours in the dark to get to safety.

Between April 12 and 16th, Israeli settlers rioted in al-Mughayyir, Duma, Deir Dibwan, Beitin and Aqraba, West Bank. During these attacks four Palestinians were murdered including Omar Hamed(17) who was shot in the head during a settler rampage. IDF soldiers were present during this incident and it is unclear if he was shot by soldiers or settlers.

In another rampage, two civilians Al-Rahman Bani Fadel, Mohammed Bani Jami’ and a paramedic were shot. In video footage of the incident IDF soldiers are seen shooting. Settlers and the IDF have a symbiotic relationship, working in tandem to displace and attack Palestinians.

“What is happening right now is [the] erasure of humans, trees and stones, and anything that is Palestinian, by settlers under the support of the military. These attacks are systematic and under the support and protection of the army. There were also settlers in army uniforms among the attackers. The situation frankly is disastrous…The solution is to uproot and dismantle all the settlements,” said Muntaser Al-Maliki, a resident of Kufr Malik, a village attacked during a settler rampage.

Financial institutions like Santander Bank have a responsibility to ensure they are not investing in war crimes. Santander continues to invest in the illegal settlements, despite the increased violence towards Palestinians in the West Bank

OUR DEMANDS

Breaking Ties with Genocide and Oppression

We are deeply troubled by the sponsorship choices made by Dallas Pride. Corporate sponsors include Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Toyota, Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Starbucks, and Santander. These sponsors are complicit in actively facilitating and profiting from genocide, ethnic cleansing, and illegal occupation. Dallas Pride’s investment in U.S. imperialism and genocide implicates them in the same systems that oppress the LGBTQ+ community at large.

The Ongoing Genocide in Gaza and Ethnic Cleansing in Sudan

Let us confront the stark realities. As of May 27th, the Gaza ministry reports that 36,050 Palestinians have lost their lives in the ongoing genocide, and 81,026 have been injured. Their families mourn, and their communities suffer. Meanwhile, in Sudan, over 14,000 people have been ethnically cleansed and murdered. The Israeli Occupation Forces, Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) perpetuate violence, causing mass starvation and displacement among innocent civilians.

Our Demands

We call upon the Dallas Pride Organization to take immediate action:

  1. Sever Ties with Corporations Profiting from Genocide: Dallas Pride must dissociate itself from companies that profit from human suffering. We cannot celebrate Pride while endorsing those who actively facilitate genocide and ethnic cleansing.
  2. Actively Uplift All Oppressed Folks: Our fight for liberation extends beyond the LGBTQ+ community. We stand in solidarity with Palestinians, Sudanese, Haitian, Congolese individuals, and all oppressed folks. Their voices matter, and our struggles are intertwined.
  3. Seek Local, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC Sponsorships: Instead of mega-corporations, seek sponsorships from local businesses, LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, and BIPOC-owned companies. Pride should reflect our community’s diversity and resilience.
  4. Support Cease-Fire and Anti-Oppression Stance: We demand an immediate and permanent cease-fire in Gaza and Sudan. Dallas Pride must take a clear stand against oppression, colonialism, imperialism, and violence.
  5. Call for End of Brutal Siege on Gaza: For 17 years, Gaza has endured a suffocating siege. We call for its immediate lifting—a step toward justice and compassion.
  6. Call for End of the over 75-Year Occupation of Palestine: Our commitment to justice compels us to advocate for an end to the occupation that has spanned generations.
  7. Call for U.S. Accountability: Dallas Pride should denounce U.S. complicity in Zionism & genocide and advocate for accountability on the global stage.
  8. Call for Release of Palestinian Prisoners: We stand with those unjustly detained. Their liberation is intertwined with our collective liberation.
  9. Call for Reversal of UNRWA Cuts: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) plays a crucial role. We demand Dallas Pride advocate for the immediate reversal of any cuts to its funding.
